This 8-session course, targeted at young girls age 8 to 18 years old, is designed to inspire and empower more young black girls to pursue careers in tech. You will explore different areas of tech and the many career paths available, have hands-on experience with tech tools and activities, build your confidence and self-efficacy in tech and much more.
Technology is not just about using gadgets and apps. It's also about creating them. And right now, there's a huge demand for people who can create, design, and innovate using technology. In fact, by 2025, it's estimated that there will be over 3 million open tech jobs in the United States alone.
But despite this growing demand, there's a problem. Women, and especially women of color, are underrepresented in tech. According to the National Science Foundation, in 2019, only 18% of computer science degrees were awarded to women. And when we look at the numbers for black women, it's even more striking: only 3% of computer science degrees were awarded to black women.
This course will inspire and empower more young black girls to pursue careers in tech and show them that tech is not just for boys, and that they too can create, innovate, and make a difference using technology.
Over the duration of the course, you'll be exploring different areas of tech, from coding and web development to robotics and artificial intelligence. You'll learn about the basics of each field, and you'll also hear from women who are already working in these areas. You'll get to try out some hands-on activities and projects to get a feel for what it's like to work in tech.
Some of the specific goals of this course include:
By the end of this course, you will have a sense of what's possible in tech, and have a better idea of what you might be interested in pursuing. You'll know that you have the power to create, to innovate, and to make a difference using technology. And you will be inspired to continue learning and exploring tech beyond this course.
