Description

Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf community.

Students will learn basic vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, as they learn the cultural foundations of ASL. Students will start by learning the manual alphabets moving toward learning fingerspelling names, the family unit, basic common phrases and the importance of facial expressions and the grammatical syntax of ASL.

Study materials will be available to students to use for practicing vocabulary and sentences. At the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a short interaction in ASL with clarity.

Phyllis Gaines began her Sign Language journey at the New York School of American Sign Language Institute.

She continued her education earning a M.S degree from the only Deaf University in the world, Gallaudet University. Gaines, an ASL educator for 20 years at High Schools, instructor at a community college and private sectors.

She continues to dedicate her passion into her life’s mission; “bridging the gap between Deaf & hearing culture through education and the performing arts"
