The way software is built is changing.
Artificial intelligence can now help developers write code, explain complex concepts, find bugs, generate ideas, work with documentation and build software faster than ever before. But AI does not replace the need to understand how software works. In fact, the ability to think, question, design, test and make good technical decisions has become more important.
Kerryn Academy's Year 1 AI-Driven Software Engineering program introduces students to the fundamentals of modern software development while teaching them how to work effectively alongside AI.
Students begin with the foundations of programming and computational thinking, learning how software works and how programmers solve problems. They will learn Python, one of today's most widely used programming languages, while also developing practical skills in web development and modern software engineering.
As they progress, students are introduced to AI-assisted development. Rather than treating AI as a shortcut for doing the work, students learn how to use AI as a development partner — asking better questions, understanding generated code, debugging problems, testing solutions, improving their programs and recognizing when AI gets something wrong.
The program also introduces Git and GitHub, APIs, data, software projects, and the basic concepts behind building and deploying applications. Students will gradually move from following instructions to designing and building their own solutions.
Throughout the year, learning is project-based. Students don't just learn programming concepts in isolation; they use those concepts to create things.
By the end of Year 1, students should have more than a collection of coding exercises. They should have the beginnings of a software portfolio, experience working with modern development tools, an understanding of how AI fits into the software development process, and—most importantly—the ability to approach a problem and figure out how to build a solution.
The course is designed for beginners. Students do not need to know how to program before starting.
Curiosity, persistence and a willingness to experiment are far more important.
